Ben Councell, a 6 foot 5 inch, 225 pound outside linebacker from North Carolina pledged his allegiance to Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish.  Councell's combination of size and speed (he runs a 4.4 second 40 yard dash!) makes him an exciting addition to a class that is shaping up well for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame Owes Texas a "Thank You"

As the Super-conference talk has fizzled, Notre Dame can thank Bevo and the Texas Longhorns for halting a massive regrouping in college football.  The formation of 16 team conferences would have undoubtedly threatened ND's independent way of life, likely forcing them to join a conference like the Big-10 before they were left in the wake of massive conference overhauls.

Head Coach Brian Kelly made it clear that he is thankful that Notre Dame's independence will be upheld.  “I don't want to be in a Big Ten footprint for recruiting,” said Coach Kelly to ESPN's Bruce Feldman. “I worry about that. I know if we can recruit coast to coast as an independent, I have a better chance of getting the kinds of guys that we need to get here to succeed and still beat (Alabama). That's the key here -- still beat Alabama or whoever is the national champion.”

Irish faithful can now breathe a sigh of relief as their recently shaky independent foundation settles once again.

Report: Spencer Boyd leaving ND

Freshman Spencer Boyd is leaving Notre Dame.  Boyd cited family reasons as the motivating factor in this decision.  Considering that he has a 2 year old son back home, Spencer is seemingly prioritizing his family first, which is admirable.

Boyd elected to join the Fighting Irish early, passing up his last semester of High School to participate in spring practice in South Bend.  He will remain at Notre Dame until the first academic summer session wraps up at ND.  Boyd will likely end up playing his first college football snap for former ND assistant and new South Florida head coach Skip Holtz.

While it is alsways difficult to see someone leave the ND family, it is much less painful when the young man is making a decision like this; to be a better father.  Good luck Spencer.
