BC Game Wrapup

The exchange between Jimmy Clausen and BC wide receiver Rich Gunnell pretty much summed up the entire game.

Just as Jimmy walked away as the better man, ND walked away with the win as the better team.  Rich Gunnell got his shots in during the game, but the shots ended when the final whistle blew.

As for the game itself, here's a quick list of reactions:

  • Once again, the game came down to the last drive.  Notre Dame is solely responsible for making a 27 year old worry about the condition of his heart.
  • Once again, we had to rely on a spotty defense to hold on to a slim lead in the closing moments.
  • Once again, Jimmy Clausen provided us with a comeback win.
  • The offense, for the first time all year, looked out of sync for much of the game.  USC hangover?
  • The run defense showed continued improvement.  We held the 8th ranked rushing offense to 70 yards.
  • Unfortunately Knute Rockne popularized this thing called the forward pass back in the 1920's and our defense hasn't figured out a way to stop it.
  • Armando Allen ran hard.  Hughes tried, but got knocked out on the goal line.
  • Golden is thy Tate.  (I've been waiting to use that line since I saw it on a tee-shirt in the student section)
  • Should we make "Manti for Heisman" tee shirts next year?
  • I like the shakeups on defense.  Sergio is a better option at safety and Harrison Smith is better off at LB.
  • I'll give the D some credit, 5 turnovers should win you a game easily.
  • I was shocked to see Toma in the game.  It was a decent debut for the freshman with a couple of catches.  Just don't drop the ball Roby.
  • I've shot snot rockets further than most of Turks punts on Saturday.  I'm not suprised that Maust is getting a shot at his old job this week.

We won.  We snapped the 6 game losing streak and are sitting at 5-2.  I have to agree with the stance taken in Dome and Domer's latest podcast, a win is a win.  Going back to the preseason, where did you see this team after game 7?  I can honestly say that I expected the Irish to have 1, maybe 2 losses at this point.  The team has progressed.  We could easily be 7-0.  Granted, there is a flip side to that argument. As it stands right now, we could be headed to a major bowl at the end of the year.

Congrats Notre Dame on the W.  Oh, and BC... Jimmy got the last laugh.

GO IRISH!
