You guys gonna do a live show?
I think you overstate the quality of ND's run defense. Although they held UM's backs to 2.3 yards/carry, UCONN was able to hold the same guys to 2.8 yards/carry. Considering the UCONN game was in AA and the ND game was in SB, the .5 difference does not seem all that significant.
On top of this, ND was absolutely carved up by Robinson. His yards weren't gathered because ND was dropping in pass coverage and he scrambled for a bunch of yard. Robinson got his yards from designed running plays.
Considering that Purdue was starting (due to injuries) their third-string RB and Michigan's RB don't seem to be very good, the MSU game should be the first real test of ND traditional run defense. By Sunday we should know if the ND run defense is the one who shut down the Michigan RB's or the one who couldn't stop Denard Robinson.
We might be working towards a live show, its a matter of timing at this point. We are waiting to see how much attention the podcast gets before we commit to a scheduled live broadcast.
As it is now, we try to record the podcast every Monday evening. We are willing to coordinate with possible callers if anyone is interested in calling in during the recording session. Fire us an email @ theleprechaunsgold@gmail.com
Good point. This game will be a good measuring stick. ND will not face another athlete like Robinson all year.
About the phantom fumble...he fumbled into the end zone. It would've been a touchback and Michigan ball. Rodriguez commented on how his players should've chased the ball down and it probably would've been reviewed had a Wolverine player picked it up. I understand seeing your team as a couple plays away from a victory is helpful, but the Irish were a couple plays away from being blown out as well. 1 dropped pass, 2 missed field goals and 2 poorly blown coverages and 1 missed fumble in the end zone widens the score by as much as 17 points. Yes Crist played well, and 2 of his passes accounted for nearly half of his pass yards. He also had a few drives where he didn't move the ball or score points.
From a Michigan standpoint...run defense wasn't bad considering the talent that ND has on the line and in that backfield. M. Floyd should've had a bigger game. Denard accounted for a lot of offense, but had he thrown for 500 yards would anyone say this offense is only him? Doubtful. He passed for half of that, so you have to include his receivers in that discussion.
Michigan's run defense wasn't bad when they were able to bring 8 or 9 guys into the box to stop the run. that's their advantage when our only decent QB is sitting on the sidelines.
Michigan won, (and yes, opportunities were missed on boths sides of the ball), but we would have seen a different game had Crist palyed the entire game.
Congrats Michigan and more importantly, congrats Denard. You are the key to DickRod's job.
and regards to your fumble comment, you are correct, it would be Michigan's ball on the 20, IF and only if, the ball went out of the endzone. None of the camera angles show the ball going out of the endzone. The rule states, if none recovers the ball in the endzone, then ND gets it at the 1 yard line.
So, it was a missed call, and ND should have gotten the ball on the 1.
Looks like Crist may have had a concussion after all.
Here is a quote from Brian Kelly: "We didn't see anything until we were ready to take the field. We were in the huddle. We had just got clearance from the TV tout to take the field. We were under a minute. That's when he said, 'Coach, I just don't remember this play.' You could look at him and you could tell that he wasn't fully in charge. So that's when we made the decision to make the change."
If he couldn't remember the play it was more than an ocular migraine. He head was messed up. Does this pose a problem for ND going forward?
